This article outlines how to set up SFTP using the Cyberduck application. While Cyberduck is used in this guide, your IT team may prefer a different SFTP client. We recommend confirming any preferred tools or setup requirements with your internal IT team before getting started.
Step 1: Download Cyberduck
- Open a web browser and search for Cyberduck
- Download the application for Windows or macOS (Cyberduck is free)
- Open the Cyberduck application once the download is complete
Step 2: Create a New Connection
- In Cyberduck, click the plus (+) icon in the lower left-hand corner
- Enter the following connection details:
Important: From the dropdown menu, select “SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)” (this is different from the default option)

prod-sftp.joinforma.com -
Port:
22 - Username: Provided by Forma

Password: Provided by Forma
- Note: Passwords are case-sensitive—enter exactly as provided
Optional:
- Use the “Labels” field to name your connection (e.g., “Forma Payroll Files” or “Forma Demographics”)
- The nickname field will auto-populate
- Once all fields are completed, press Enter on your keyboard
- You will return to the main Cyberduck window
Step 3: Connect to Forma SFTP
- Locate the connection you just created
- Double-click to open it
- Once authenticated, you will see a list of available folders
Step 4: Understand Folder Structure
Below is an overview of the key folders you will see:

/to_twic
Used to upload employer-sponsored demographic files -
/from_twic
Used to retrieve payroll reports from Forma- Payroll files are typically uploaded to this folder on the 5th of each month

/pretax
Used for pre-tax files, including:- Demographics
- Elections
- Contributions

/test_to_twic
Used for submitting test files to Forma for review -
/archive and /test
These folders are not actively used—please do not upload files here
Additional Notes
- Always confirm with your IT team if there are specific requirements or preferred tools for SFTP access
- Ensure files are uploaded to the correct folder to avoid processing delays.
